The “Progressive/Staycation” Family Reunion

Or what really happened… After being scared off from Salamander flats because of walltowall people and mosquitoes - We decided not to camp which everyone was more than happy about - Thursday we ate at Deann’s then played minute to winit - Or as I call it playing with your garbage - Friday morning we were treated to a HUGE breakfast at Mom’s then headed up to Mutual Dell - where we all got to do the zipline - upsidedown- backwards and superman style - Even the little kids did it - Kwynn because her grandma is a torture master - We only had one near death experience when Whitney could have plowed into a van of girls trying to turn around - Luckily “Dashing Farm Boy Seth” saved the day and made the day of the girlload -Brad now has HUGE muscles from being the brakeman all day and Sally is sore from trying to bungi stop people until the real men stepped in- they only let Seth and Dan almost hit the tree - We then had lunch by Roger (Connie was suppose to help but had a close friends funeral and wasn’t able to make it) Then it was off to Tibble Fork for canoeing - John in his motor-haulthewholefamily - home- Burtenshaws riding Idaho style and a few other brave souls - The mud island was a hit as well as some of the manly men trying to paddle upstream in the rocks - they didn’t get too far - After all getting enough sun we headed back to the Dell for some awesome Volleyball before a tasty dinner of Steven’s favorite meal - MORMON HAYSTACKS - Then it was off to the Amptheater where lots of fond memories and songs from the good old station wagon days were shared - My fav was Johns rendition of “In the Jungle” Young Family Reunion style - We need the words to all your songs - Oh wait the “VIDIOT” got it all on tape! She just brings things onto herself - Also enjoyed all the cat stories and Kaylene and Lynn’s sharing their SOB stories! Really enjoyed all the little grandkids - That’s what life is really about isn’t it - There was only one bruiser on Brewer - A good time was had by all - Steven is still crying whenever he thinks of Trudy - We enjoyed the little kids boogie-ing! Saturday found us eating again and then ready for one last VB game - Then the ones who didn’t need to get back to the farm headed to the splash pad in Highland - then had pizza and headed home - I appreciate all for being so flexible and willing to make the best out of the plan qxzkg changes - You are all awesome and I am so glad we could spend some time together to make such wonderful memories. Each Family was represented at one time or another -

More girls weekend

Trudy and Julie survived the trip out. And obviously are happy to be here. Even if Julie did destroy her sunglasses when she smacked her head on the bottom of the deck on her way out. Yes she is tall. But with all the snow the deck is rather close to the 'ground'.

Scripture Power

One reason I love being part of the Young family is that I have learned so much from each family member and been helped along on my journey. I sent out an e-mail asking for answers to the following questions:

Examples in my life where the scriptures have taught me what I should do
How the teachings from the scriptures have brought me closer to the savior

Here are the responses that were inspiring enough for me to post them on the family blog:

Several years ago I accepted Pres. Hinckleys challenge to read the Book of Mormon - I started kind of late so I had to read 50 pages a day to meet the ending date - I read in Hawaii even - I would read every morning before I road my bike to work - One morning after reading about how the sons of Mosiah were protected I was riding my bike - in the dark - and hit a HUGE highland pothole - As I was flying through the air I knew that angels were there and I was PROTECTED because my fall and slide through the gravel was very SOFT - I was glad that I had been reading the scriptures that morning and knew that I was being blessed - I hope that was what you wanted - Love ya Sally

2 powerful/helpful scriptures in my life have been
1) Phillipians 4:13 -"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." When things are tough and I want to say I quit, this reminds me that I can do it and I need to turn to the Savior because HE is the one who gives me the strength to carry on and succeed.
2) D&C 121:43 - this has been huge to me as a parent and now even as a teacher when being at my wits end with a child or student. I know if I follow this teaching, the outcome will be much better than with any other approach or me reacting to whatever situation it may be.
"Reproving (giving correction) betimes with sharpness (with clarity), when moved upon by the Holy Ghost (not in anger, but when you are being inspired- this means I have to be asking for help and listening for the response); and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved lest he esteem thee to be his enemy. (the child always needs the reassurance the he or she is loved) The Lord's way of giving correction is so much better than punishments or reactions to another's behavior.
Funny story with that - a year or so ago when Chris and Shelly were living with us, Chris was being quite annoyed with little Logan. I listened to him rant for a bit and then quietly said, "Chris, stop. You are trying to reason with a 3 year old and it is not possible. Just love him and show him another way." Grant, listening in, chimed in with "Chris, listen to your mother. She is the reason you are alive today."

I always liked the one about "if ye have not the Spirit, ye shall not teach" because so many times I have been teaching and just blah blah blahing and none of the children are listening BUT when I pray and prepare myself, not only are the children listening, but they are staring at me and their sweet little faces are shining!  I also like the one about "out of small things proceedeth that which is great" because that is why we are here, we small things, to learn and serve and grow and build a wonderful thing out of the small things.  Little blessings keep on adding up every second of the day, and if we stop to realize, we are overwhelmed!

A scripture that has helped me a lot is Proverbs 3: 5, 6  "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths." It especially has helped me when things aren't going the way I want them to, or thought they would. We just need to trust that Heavenly Father knows what we need, and we need to be grateful for what we have.

To the wonderful list, I would add this scripture:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).

Life can be so crazy sometimes! I love the reminder in this scripture that if we are doing the things that Heavenly Father wants us to, then everything will fall into place--our burdens made light. There are days when rest is all I am longing for! With Christ as our companion we can find it in our hearts, homes and families--we learn to prioritize better. I will never forget a General Conf talk by Dallin H Oaks about this scripture. He goes on to talk about how Christ can heal us, if we let him. It was powerful! And came at a time in my life when I needed to hear that so badly. How grateful I am for the "modern-day scripture" that we are blessed with every 6 months.

Postpartum Depression

Our neighbors looked out the window the week after Gideon was born and saw Andy outside in the cold, sleeting weather cutting down a tree by hand. He was up high in the tree. They took the pictures of Andy up there (without any safety harness) and thought Andy may be suffering from postpartum depression...

How could Andy or I be depressed when we have such cute kids to entertain us?

Gideon finally had to pitch in and help me catch up on Laundry. He fell asleep in the basket.

Hello All! I know you all have probably seen some of these on facebook, but for those of you that aren't on there (like myself), here are some Halloween photos to laugh at.

I ended up dressing up 4 times and let me tell you, that was a little too much! Mostly because I had to be something different each time. I know, I'm weird!

That being said, Dan almost matched me: he dressed up 3 times. Wow!

Just kidding--I did a recount and I dressed up 5 times! That HAS to be some sort of record.

Mom and Dad somewhere beautiful! They recently went on a 2 week trip touring 7 or 8 temples in the Northwest. Mom "JoAn" handed us (Jenelle and Andy) there camera couple weeks ago and asked us put some pictures on the family blog. I'm not sure what all the pictures are of. But we will pick some anyway.

Caleb is enjoying being part of Mountain Crest High School Marching Band again this year. He is in a lot of parades and competitions in the fall. I have included his schedule below. OW YOUNG Reunion

These are photos from the Odin and Rhodora Young Family Reunion held July of 2009. We had pretty good turn out, but for those of you who couldn't make it we hope you will enjoy this taste of the fun. I will add to them as I receive others so check back.
Above we have Keith Young, Dennis Young and Bob Wilcox. Some of the old farts. And below we have Larry Hansen, Dennis Hansen and John Young. Some of the less old farts.

There was lots of standing around talking. And sitting around talking.

We went hiking and saw some beautiful flowers.
We don't think anyone was actually buried here but it would be a nice place to be buried.
We were told we were headed for the cave over there. It never seemed to get any closer, but we heard that some people actually got there.

MTC Fun

I thought I would just share with you how serious the flu is at the MTC and how seriously we are taking it. And if I could figure out how, I would make this stop underlining. :)
Ellen, Teddy and Jolynn- The 3 not- so-little pigs. Ellen made our tops. If people think we are half as fun as we think we are then we are hilarious.
Do you recognize my new secretary. She has been invaluable. Dr. Brown asked what I was paying her and I told him I gave her birth and what more could she want. She was the worst one too- a whole 4 1/2 hours of labor. And a whopping 8 1/2 pounds. But she has been worth her weight (current- not birth) in gold the last 2 weeks. She has taken more temps than a weatherman. And created a spreadsheet for tracking districts getting meds that has saved me much time and tylenol. So I took her to Ripple's for dinner. And helped her eat her fries.

Grandpa Young oversaw the whole production. He said that he would stay upstairs and play the part of Elohiem.

Deann was really feeling the music.
Jolynn was the director and the pianist along with some assistance from little ones.
Sally told us all about a story of how she about lost it at work today. Ask her to tell you the story and sing for you... she had an interesting twist on a Christmas song. How did it go Sally? Jolynn asked if Sally's rendition of the song is what they meant by going Postal.

Jordan and Tierney entertained Allana playing with the miniature baby Jesus.
Zak played one of the "Wise Guys" along with Jordan and Ben.
Corinne led the heavenly choir in their carols, while Quinn played the organ.
Tabitha and Erin were the beautiful Angels who proclaimed the birth of Christ.

Thanks so much to Jolynn for reviving the Nativity Christmas tradition! I've heard about it for many years from Andy, but it was fun to be a part of it.

Family Reunion Highlights DVD

The much anticipated Reunion DVDs will be debuting sometime this December. The talent show is all ready with titles and chapter markers...now we just need to put the music into the highlights reel (Andy has done all the work). Hopefully we can have it finished before the new year :)

Any how, I thought they were kind of cute, albeit hard to see us through the gargantuan snow "flakes". The best part is that Amy F Dimick is taking the pics out in the snow in her "toe cleavage" shoes! Enjoy! :)

Graham cracker CHAOS

Graham cracker shrapnel was flying, everything and everyone was covered with frosting, and philosophical discussions were had as to where hair migrates when you go bald (don't ask). But all in all, a great time was had by all, even though the artistic outcomes were highly questionable.

Swearing was kept to a minimum, no one hurled from mixing spice drops and Nerds, and there was nary a bikini fungus to be found. Clearly an improvement over LAST year.

We just wanted to post some photos of our wonderful vacation. We (just Dan and I) went to the Bahamas on a cruise from Nov. 10-14. It was awesome!! Very relaxing and perfect weather, we loved it! We are ready to move to Grand Bahama Island, which was our most favorite day of the whole trip. We will just live on the beach in the shack we found. Hope everyone has a fabulous Thanksgiving!! Thanks for being such a great Family!!

Pumpkin Party in Smithfield

Well, last night was our annual Cache Valley Young Relations Pumpkin Carving Party. And since it is so fun to put pictures on here, I took a lot!! In attendance we had the Walt Young family, the Pasketts, the Losee family, the Morin-Long family, and all 3 freshman girls: Tabitha, Paige, and Erin! I bet you are all so jealous that you couldn't come. We had a great time and I am still enjoying roasted pumpkin seeds, as I write. Look ahead to some pictures from our Gingerbread (ie. graham cracker) house party in December. Those always get a little crazy!!

I guess you could call me a stage mom of sorts, because I love to take pictures of Baylee when she is all dressed up! She was invited to a birthday party yesterday and it was, of course, a costume party. And since I am a closet drama nerd, we had to do her hair funky and put makeup on her. I think she is dang cute!! Dan thinks I am kind of silly. His exact (sort of) words were "you're so cute. A 7 year old is going to a costume party, and you give her prom hair". What can I say? I have one kid that is a girl and she is going to look sassy as all get out for this party! :)
We will see what she is for Halloween since she borrowed this costume from our neighbor! Ah, the life of a cheapskate.

Proud Band Parents

Since there haven’t been many contributions to the Young Family Blog, I thought I would contribute and brag a little bit.

I have included pictures of Caleb and the Mt. Crest Marching Band. They are a really good band. It has been fun to go to his competitions and cheer for them. He competed in Pocatello, ID on Saturday. They took second place to Sky View High School by 2 points out of a thousand possible points. Makelle loves to cheer for him and was really excited that he won an award at the competition.

The season is quickly coming to a close. He will compete at BYU on October 14, Dixie State College on October 24, and UNLV on October 25.

Those of you coming to Keith’s wedding may be able to fit one of his competitions in. He will be performing at Dixie State College on Friday at 9 p.m. and in Las Vegas at noon and 7 p.m. if they make the finals for that competition.

Meet Alice. She is my 'new' 2001 Accord. She is dark green. I named her Alice in honor of my recent unexpected fall into wonderland. I hope she is good in snow since I suspect come December I will be in a winter wonderland, followed by spring, summer and fall again. It's kind of creepy how you can see the neighbors house reflected in the garage window don't you think?

We dropped off Jacob at the MTC last week. They kept telling everyone that the bandaid method for saying goodbye was the best, the quicker you get it over with the less painful, so we didn't stay in Provo very long. This is the picture we sent with his application. I had him take one with him to florida to show how beautiful the scenery is in Idaho!! We will forward his emails when we get them.

My new house

Amy requested a photo of the house after I had the bushes ripped out. It looks a little naked and vulnerable I think. How appropriate. And no I did not kill the bushes in lieu of killing something else. :) We had planned on doing it all summer. It just took til now for the guy to come do it. How ironic. So now you know what the house really looks like. And you can't use the excuse that you didn't recognize it for now stopping to see me.

Phew! that took me awhile to figure out, since I am one of those "techno retard"s that Deann was talking about. Here is Baylee along with the rest of our babysitting group's kids at Bear Lake. Yes, she is a rather tall girl. The boy her size to her right is 2 years older! Amazon woman-girl.

At least she is kinda cute, or we'd have to send her off to the circus.

Howdy! We are just running our "test post" as opposed to a post test. We enjoyed a lovely weekend at Bear Lake on Friday and Saturday, so if I figure this out I will post some pictures from us. We are so in disbelief that school is starting this week. Where did the summer go? Oh, one little update: my ward has lost its collective mind and called me to be the nursery coordinator. I am not sure what the whole "coordinator" thing is about, but I am pretty sure that there will be some people who stop coming to church when they find out I am in charge of their precious little ones. Mwahahahaha (evil laugh).

Elusive Inverted Book Sloth spotted in Northern Utah

The very rare Inverted Book Sloth has been seen hanging out in Petersboro. I think it is called "Makelle".

OK, it was just a test on uploading a photo. . . . .

That Makelle is a reading fool. We went to "meet the 1st grade teacher night" and the teacher had Makelle read for her, then do some numbers and stuff, and said, "Well, I don't have a single thing in my classroom that she isn't already beyond." Sooooo, I'm wondering why we're starting her out in 1st grade versus 2nd? May have to pursue that.
